From November 8 to 10, 2017, US President Donald Trump paid a state visit to China. President Trump was said to have developed a stronger personal and working relationship with his Chinese counterpart during this visit. The two leaders exchanged candid views on bilateral relations as well as major international and regional issues of common interest. From both sides it was considered to be a great success, with a consensus reached on further promoting bilateral ties in the new era.

On November 10, the SIAS held a seminar on “Trump’s China Visit: Impact on China-US Relations”, together with the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies (SIIS). Yang Jiemian, Chairman of the Academic Affairs Council at the SIIS, made an opening speech. Experts from several local organizations attended the meeting, including Fudan University, Tongji University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai International Studies University, the SIIS, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, and Shanghai Public Diplomacy Association.

Participants shared their opinions on the outcomes of President Trump’s visit, the strategic leading role of head-of-state diplomacy in developing bilateral ties, as well as the prospect of China-US relations.
