SIAS hosts first Marine Salon of 2017

On June 6, 2017, the SIAS held the first of this year’s Marine Salon series, in light of the latest operation of a US navy warship in the South China Sea. 

Participants looked into the current situation in the South China Sea, the purpose and implications of the US military operation in this area, as well as the Trump administration’s South China Sea policy. 

Pointing out the significance of reef constructions in the South China Sea, attendees also shared their opinions on future prospects for territorial disputes in the area. 

Representatives from Xinhua News Agency, Center for Oceans Strategy Studies of China at Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, Shanghai University of Political Science and Law, PLA University of International Relations, East China University of Political Science and Law, and Shanghai Institutes for International Studies joined the SIAS research staff at the meeting.
