SIAS cohosts seminar ‘Understanding Terrorism and Counterterrorism: Perspectives from France and China’

On April 27, 2017, the Crisis Management and Anti-Terrorism Research Center at the SIAS held a seminar on Understanding Terrorism and Counterterrorism: Perspectives from France and China, together with the “Belt & Road” Initiative Research Center at Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS). 

Zhang Jiadong, Director of the Center for South Asian Studies at Fudan University and Director of the Crisis Management and Anti-Terrorism Research Center at the SIAS, delivered a keynote speech on the history and development of China’s efforts against terrorism. He also explained China’s main principles and strategies. 

Marc Julienne, resident associate fellow at the Foundation for Strategic Research (FRS) and PhD candidate at the Paris-based National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilizations (INALCO), introduced the situation in France. 

Julienne discussed the definition and roots of terrorism, and pointed out France’s counterterrorism strategies and challenges in the future. 

Academics from Fudan University, the SASS, and Shanghai Institutes for International Studies joined the SIAS research staff at the meeting. Participants shared their views on future cooperation between China and France against terrorism.
