SIAS launches two latest volumes of Americans in Shanghai

Posted:2015-09-01

Americans in Shanghai volumes 1 (English) and 2 (bilingual), compiled by the SIAS, were launched in Shanghai on August 31, 2015. Representatives from Shanghai People’s Political Consultative Conference, Shanghai Federation of Social Science Associations, Shanghai Public Diplomacy Association, Shanghai Newspapers Association, the US Consulate-General in Shanghai and the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai, and guests from various organizations attended the event.

Wu Xinbo, President of SIAS, delivered the welcoming speech, and Mrs Gwendolyn Cardno, Principal Deputy Officer of the US Consulate-General in Shanghai, expressed her congratulations. Justin O’Jack, Chief Representative of the University of Virginia China Office, made a speech on behalf of all those profiled in the books. Shen Guoming, Party Secretary and Vice Chairman of the Shanghai Federation of Social Science Associations, proposed a toast.

Centering on Americans working and living in Shanghai, the books shed light on their rise to success, in an effort to present Shanghai through their eyes, while showcasing the character of Shanghai-US exchanges with a personal touch. The first volume of the book (Chinese language-only edition) was published in 2013. The latest two volumes, in both Chinese and English, represent an effort to expand the readership for the project and promote the image of Shanghai as an attractive international metropolis.

Those featured in the books include outstanding Americans active in the fields of politics, business, education and the arts. Some of them are accomplished senior executives, some are erudite experts and professors, some are brave entrepreneurs and some are elite business people with an interest in philanthropy. Even with their different experiences, they have all reaped good rewards in Shanghai, and dedicated themselves to the growth of the Chinese city.

A sister book project on Chinese Americans hailing from Shanghai is expected to be published in 2016.
