SIAS cohosts seminar ‘Trump’s Foreign Policy: Perspectives from US Think Tanks’

On October 31, 2017, the SIAS held a seminar on President Trump’s foreign policy, together with the Center for Think Tank Studies (CTTS) at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS).

Wang Chengzhi from the CTTS, Long Fei, Zhang Qi and Yu Ying from the SIAS, gave a presentation on their research project: “Trump’s Foreign Policy: Perspectives from US Think Tanks.” Their report, based on a selection of recent publications from more than 200 leading research facilities in the US, focuses on America’s global strategy, its Asia-Pacific strategy and China-US relations. 

At the meeting, the project team shared their analysis on the Trump administration’s foreign and trade policies, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. 

A few local experts attended the meeting and shared their views on the topics being discussed. They included: Wang Lianhe, Professor at the School of International Relations and Public Affairs of Shanghai International Studies University, Feng Dengdao, Researcher from the Research Office of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee, Feng Shujun, Deputy Director of Shanghai Institute of Commercial Development, Qiu Meirong, Associate Professor at the School of Political Science and International Relations of Tongji University, and Li Ling, Deputy Director at the CTTS. The meeting was moderated by CTTS Executive Director Yang Yaqin. 

While recognizing the report’s academic values, many of the participating experts also pointed out areas for improvement.
